Nuestra historia

Five wineries make up Familia Martínez Bujanda: Finca Valpiedra (DOCa Rioja), Finca Antigua (DO La Mancha), Finca Montepedroso (DO Rueda), Viña Bujanda (DOCa Rioja) and Cosecheros y Criadores (Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla), all of them with something in common: the elaboration of wines from own vineyards, but with the diversity and richness of growing areas very different from each other.

Joaquín Martínez Bujanda founded the original winery in Oyón (Rioja), in 1889, already with the clear concept to elaborate wines from his own vineyards; this was against the general trend in Rioja originated by the Phylloxera disaster in Bordeaux.

The family expansion began in 1951 with Cosecheros y Criadores, a winery conceived mainly to export wines, which today sell the 60% of its Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla production in international markets. Cosecheros y Criadores is pure innovation, since the versatility of its wines, to their presentations, with which Familia Martínez Bujanda has been able to adapt to the demands of the consumers.

In the 1990´s, the brother and sister team of Carlos and Pilar Martinez Bujanda, with the experience of many years working with their father, decided to start a new project, based on the recurring theme of the winery philosophy: the elaboration of estate wines.

In 1997 they start to build Finca Valpiedra, a winery integrated within an exceptional landscape located along one of the meanders of the Ebro River, on the boundary of the towns of Fuenmayor and Cenicero. Hardly two years later, Carlos and Pilar “fell in love” with these spectacular and unrepeatable vineyard in one of the most extreme areas for growing vines.  In 2009 the wine making family decides to bottle all the production from the rest of their Rioja vineyards and open Viña Bujanda.

Since then, although focused in the elaboration of red wines, Familia Martínez Bujanda starts in 2008, buying 25 hectares of vineyards and building Finca Montepedroso (opened in 2012), the elaboration of whites with the personality of a unique estate, in the very heart of the D.O. Rueda.
